Hello Families,
I wanted to inform you that due to the weather forecast for this afternoon, we will be having a shortened practice that will end at 5:30 pm. In case your athlete is unable to attend practice and has not signed up for their events yet, please send me an email today with their choices for Saturday. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Y/I Practice Meet recap and Meet 3/9 info
Although our practice meet was designed to train the volunteers, your Youth and Intermediate coaches were so impressed with all of our athletes! They are SO much fun to watch!!
Please know that for the regular season, there will be more time between events, which will make for smoother and longer transitions and more rested athletes. We appreciate all of your support as we worked out the kinks.
Our athletes have many more options for the home meet this Saturday with the Heritage Valley Blazers.
The order of running events is:
3200
Hurdles (they must be cleared by a coach on Tuesday to compete)
4×100
1600
400
100
800
200
4×400 (free event – NOT counting towards their total)
Field events will include:
Long Jump
High Jump (they must be cleared by a coach on Tuesday or Thursday to compete)
Shot Put (they must be cleared by a coach on Tuesday o fThursday to compete)
The total event total is 4 (the 4×400 does NOT count), three of which can be running. If an athlete exceeds their event total, they will be disqualified for all their events for that meet. We will monitor this as best we can, but ultimately, the athletes themselves need to be aware of their events.
If they have an event or skill they are serious about improving upon (i.e., relay, speed development/starts, long jump, shot put, high jump, strength) they should try to attend a specialty day or two that focuses on that skill.
Information for March 9th:
Arrival time: 7:45 sharp on the field
Start time: 8:30
Sign-ups will be on the clipboards starting Monday. If they are not going to attend the meet, please have them draw a line through their name.
Starting with our first official meet next week, their events for the gold and platinum batons will begin to count.
Thanks again for all of your support!
Kristin

Y/I Practice Meet Reminders
Hi Youth/Intermediate Families,
Some last-minute reminders regarding tomorrow:
- Please arrive at 7:45 (ESPECIALLY if your athlete is doing hurdles)
- Your athlete will need their uniform, black shorts, sweats (labeled), running shoes, spikes (if they use them), water, snacks, and rain gear.
- No food or drinks (other than water) are allowed on the field
- PLEASE label EVERYTHING
If you have not been able to pick up your uniform, they will be ready tomorrow from 7:30 to 7:45 ONLY. This window is small, so please be prompt.
As this is our first meet, please be patient as we work out the kinks and everyone learns their role. I told the kids all week the purpose of this meet is to train their parents, LOL!
All of the Y/I coaches are really looking forward to seeing our athletes out on the track in their orange and black!
We cannot wait for tomorrow!!

Practice Meet (3/2) Information
We are so excited for Saturday’s practice meet, where our athletes can finally compete (even if it is against only Tigres). The team has been working hard in practice, and Saturday is the first chance to see the payoff!
A few quick logistical things:
- Please have athletes meet at 7:45 sharp in our typiucal meeting place on the field. Please do your best to be on time, as we will be covering important info for the athletes.
- Please be sure they wear their uniform and bring additional warm clothes. If you have not had a chance to pick up a uniform, they will be available Saturday morning at 7:30. However, there will be a very small window on Saturday morning, so please do your best to be on time.
- Please bring sunscreen (maybe wishful thinking?) and water. There is NO food or drinks (other than water) allowed on the field.
For parents and athletes, the purpose of this meet is to “practice” for our regular season meets. Athletes will get some exposure to listening for event calls, warming up for events, and the staging process. One of the goals of the Y&I team is to prepare our athletes for high school. While the younger ages heavily rely on their coaches and parents on meet days, we expect our athletes to manage themselves and rely on their teammates much more. We expect the veteran Tigres to show leadership and help the new Tigres athletes navigate meet day activities (of course we coaches will be there to lean on as well). Many of the new Tigres might feel a bit nervous about not having competed in a track meet – it’s OK. After Saturday, they’ll be experts!
For parents, this meet is to train our volunteers in their positions so the meet runs smoothly when we host another team. Things will NOT run smoothly, and there will be delays and possibly a lot of standing around, feeling unneeded. Please be patient! Once we have a real meet, we’ll look like a finely tuned machine (fingers crossed).
The events our Youth/Intermediate team will be allowed to compete in are a subset of a typical meet. Our athlete’s options for this meet are:
- Hurdles
- 1600
- 400
- 200
- 4×400
- High Jump
- Shot Put
Please note that due to their safety, athletes must be cleared before they are allowed to participate in the Hurdles and High Jump. Please ask if you would like to understand the clearing process, but this happens at a specialty practice when those events are offered.
For the practice meet, athletes are able to compete in 2 running events and 1 field event. They aren’t required to do the maximum, but they cannot do more than 2 running events and 1 field event. The exception to this is the 4×400, which is always free.
A major area of focus for our team is sportsmanship. We are asking our athletes to really work on congratulating competitors by shaking hands after races, saying thank you to volunteers, being helpful teammates, etc. Please watch for your athletes showing sportsmanship and reinforce this at home.
We can’t wait to get our season started on Saturday!!!
If you have any questions, please email youth@venturatigres.org or call/text 805-766-7171

Y/I Suggested workout 2/19
Hi Youth and Intermediate Families,
Due to the holiday, we do not have official Tigres practice on Monday the 19th. Hill training is great for building strength, so we are suggesting the following for your athletes:
Distance:
3-minute easy run
Warm-up drills
20-25 minute run on the trails in Arroyo
Cooldown
Stretch and mobility at home
Sprints:
3-minute easy run
Warm-up drills
10 x 8-10 second hill sprints on the grass (walk down the hill), 20 seconds rest between each
Cooldown
Stretch and mobility at home
If you have questions, please let me know.
If your athlete did not turn in their code of conduct and goals to me this week, they can bring it to the track on Wednesday during our team practice or during Specialties on Tuesday or Thursday.
Please reach out with any questions, and have a great weekend!

Y/I Upcoming Week 2/12-16
Hi, Youth and Intermediate families!
We are excited to have our first official full week of practice this week! Our Team practices are always on Mondays and Wednesdays, and this week, we also have our Specialty practices to offer our athletes. You can find our Practice Schedule on the website. In regards to Tuesday/Thursday, your athlete can come to both specialty days or none; it depends entirely on their schedule and desire to try some of the events (i.e., shot put, hurdles, long jump, and high jump) they will not experience during our team workouts.
We look forward to a fun week with your athletes! Please reach out with any questions.

Y/I Teams – Welcome to the 2024 Season!
February 5, 2024
Hello, Youth and Intermediate Families!
Coaching staff:
Kristin and Jason Daw – Head Youth and Intermediate coaches
Sean Feeney
Miguel Galindo
Brian Guevara
David Hampton
Tom Holt
Ryan Kaiser
Jared Kuebler
Omar Solis
Griselda Soriano
Brenda Usery
Amber Weir
Jeremy Weir
AND 13 High School coaches!!!
Goals for the season:
- Safety
- Fun and an appreciation for the benefits of sports and exercise
- Good Sportsmanship
- Developing your athlete’s abilities and helping them to achieve their goals.
Questions and information:
The most efficient way to communicate with me is through email on the website. I am also available for questions after practice. I will email regularly, especially once the meets begin in March. You can text me as well, but I am a teacher and am, therefore, slow to respond during the school day.
Practice:
Youth and Intermediate will have team practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00 at the Buena High School track.
Parents are welcome to stay and watch, but only athletes and coaches are allowed on the field. Please be on time for pickup; a coach must stay with your athlete until you arrive.
Athletes will work with specialty coaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Preparation for practice:
Please have your athlete dressed and ready to go. They will need a bag to carry their belongings:
- Sweatshirt and bottoms
- Small towel (dish towel size)
- Water bottle (NO food/Gatorade on the track – water only)
- Spikes (if they choose to use them)
Our athletes LOVE their Tigres gear, which means many have the same water bottles, bags, and sweatshirts. PLEASE label everything!!
Attendance:
We understand that other sports, illnesses, and injuries may conflict with practice. You do not need to email me if your athlete does not attend practice, but I would appreciate knowing if they are injured and if they are not going to attend a meet. Please do not send them to practice if they are injured.
Meets:
Youth and Intermediate athletes can participate in all of the events:
Field – Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, and Shot Put
Relay – 4X100 and the 4X400
Distance – 3200, 1600, and 800
Sprints – 100, 200, and 400
Youth Athletes (2010-2011) can participate in 4 events at each meet with a maximum of 3 running events. Intermediate Athletes (2009 and older) can participate in any 4 events. The 4X100 counts toward their running event total, but the 4X400 is free 🙂
Some athletes know what events they are interested in, while others are still deciding. We will encourage them to try everything until they decide which events they like the most. Event sign-ups will be on Mondays and Wednesdays by my bag on the field.
Setting up the relay teams for the 4X100 and the 4X400 takes time. Once your athlete selects the relay, they commit to three other team athletes. Relay teams will be created based on times and attendance. Sometimes, we cannot build a full relay team due to numbers, but we will do our best to ensure it is a fair process.
I will send out more information regarding meets as the dates come closer, but for your future planning, the meet schedule on the website is accurate, and meets typically go from 8:00 – 3:00ish.
We look forward to greeting former and new athletes on Wednesday!!
See you soon,
Kristin Daw (805) 766-7171

Y/I End of the season gift pick up
The Tigres End of Season Picnic was so fun; what a great way to cap off a fantastic season! For those moving to High School, we are excited to watch your career, and your HS coaches will be thrilled with your work ethic, attitude, and personality!
If you were unable to attend the picnic, you could pick up your athlete gift and packet (ribbons, team picture, and gift) at Buena’s track on Tuesday-Thursday from 4:30-5:30. We are still practicing with the athletes moving on to Super Varsity this weekend, so have your athlete find me, and I will show them where to pick up their things.
If you have any questions, please email youth@venturatigres.org or call/text 805-766-7171

Y/I – JV Meet, Picnic info, and Varsity Practice schedule
Hi Youth and Intermediate Families!
Yesterday was the last meet for many of our athletes, and I was SO impressed with their focus in their events and support for their teammates! The weather was perfect for distance in the morning and sprinters in the afternoon, and there were some impressive PRs! Watching their progress throughout the season has truly been awesome!

The picnic will be held in the Quad area of Buena High School, located in the center of the school, behind the cafeteria. Tigres will provide various pizzas, and we ask that Youth and Intermediate athletes bring drinks for 12 people in individual containers. Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00, followed by announcements and a celebration of our athletes’ accomplishments broken down by age group.
If your athlete has misplaced something over the season, the lost and found will be brought to the picnic location for one last look before everything unclaimed is donated.
